Lester’s Statement
As a Hamilton-born artist raised by Filipino immigrant parents, my story is shaped by their resilience and vision. Their journey inspired me to pursue my own creative growth, supported by the community I grew up in.
I was introduced to large-scale artwork through local public and private installations, especially the monumental sculptures at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
My understanding of design and meaning is an ongoing journey, influenced by the teachings of artists, mentors, and heroes, both past and present.
The voice of my murals connects with people through history and heritage, unique to each location. My goal is to enrich, entertain, and educate. These murals act as giant storybooks, using visual dialogue to reveal forgotten facts, honour the past, and unite the community.
My art is deeply tied to my physical and emotional being. The physical demands of creating large-scale murals stimulate both my thoughts and creativity.
Working on murals often leads to insights that wouldn’t come from a more passive process. Emotionally, my artwork connects me to Hamilton, with each mural serving as a letter of thanks, gratitude, and inspiration—a way for me to give back to the community that has supported me.
